The Story of an Icy River and the Incoming Tide

I had just spent the day photographing shore ice and frost feathers at Eklutna Lake and had moved on to shoot the frosty trees, icy waters and rusty cars along the Eklutna Tailrace and Knik River. The light was fading and hunger was kicking in, so I turned to my husband, Fred, and told him I was ready to go. As I collected my gear to head back to the car, the silence was shattered by a distinct crack that sounded as if it came from the thin sheet of ice I had just been photographing. I turned back towards the river to investigate, as the popping and cracking increased. I couldn’t figure out what was causing it. Then I looked down at the shoreline where I was standing and saw that the water was rising. That’s when it hit me…the tide was coming in from Cook Inlet, up the Knik Arm and into the Knik River. I know we have some crazy tides here in Alaska, in fact, people surf the bore tide up Turnagain Arm all the time, but I didn’t realize it would make it this far up the river. Fascinated, I grabbed my cell phone to make a video, only to find that the below freezing temperatures had killed the battery. Then I remembered that my Canon 5D Mark II can shoot video. I had never tried it before, so it took me a minute to figure out how to get it going. The resulting video is kind of long, and the sound isn’t too great, and the commentary sucks, and unless you were there to see it in person, it’s probably pretty boring, but here it is! The first video ever shot with my camera! Let me know what you think, but try not to be too cruel.

This is the last photo I took of the ice in the Knik River before the tide came in and bust it all up.

  1. This would be great with time lapse photos or speed the video up. Loved it. Have seen this at Cold Bay in the creeks and streams on the Bering Sea. I didn’t have a camera with me and that was before digital !!! Great shot, the ice cracking is quite clear. Good job !!! Fred Sr.

So, what do you think?
