Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse

Blood Moon Eclipse Progression by Amanda Mortimer

Photo composite of total lunar eclipse, from the blood moon back to full

Did you stay up to watch the lunar eclipse on Monday night? I was fortunate, living in Alaska, I didn’t have to stay up too late. The moon rose over the Chugach Mountains just as the eclipse began, around 10:00 pm. The full eclipse took place around 11:30 and I was in bed by 2:00 am.

I wish I could tell you that I went someplace really cool to take the pictures, but that would be lying. I set my tripod up in the living room and sat there comfortably shooting pictures out the open window. This was my fist attempt at photographing an eclipse, so it took me a while to get the settings and the focus dialed in. I also tried out a few different lenses. The best results came with my 400mm fitted with a 2x converter.  All that trial and error meant that my best photos came in the last half of the eclipse. I picked out my favorite shots and created this montage spanning the hours between 11:15 pm and 1:30 am.

So, what do you think?
